Eliminating The 'Get-Even' Response
— Douglas Horton once described getting-even this way, “While seeking revenge, dig two graves - one for yourself.” For Marcus Aurelius, “The best revenge is to be unlike him who performed the injury.” We all know these men are correct and yet the idea of getting even can be a knee-jerk sort of response.
Plain and simple, revenge is unhealthy!
When you attempt to get-even, you sabotage your own self-growth. Vengeance can literally eat up our energies and in many ways damage not only our relationships but also our health. Just the thought of revenge can increase blood pressure, release neurochemicals that interfere with the optimal operation of our immune, endocrine and autonomic nervous system. Plain and simple, revenge is unhealthy!
Tit for tat actions can easily accelerate into conflict. As conflicts escalate, the stakes increase. Nations have gone to war over insults so it’s not uncommon in today’s world for conflicts to turn into aggression and suddenly a relatively sinless act becomes an all out fight.
There’s a practical reason Biblical wisdom advises one to abandon vengeance. We all know that 'two wrongs do not make a right,' but it can be hard to remember this when we feel we have been treated unfairly. Remember who you are and the person you would rather be. Don't give into the 'get-even' response. Train your mind to remain in control while desensitizing any emotional stress. Begin today!
